I was in Lowe's Shoal Creek in north Austin yesterday when I was told by two friendly Lowe's employees that as of Jan 1, pets will no longer be allowed inside their stores. Although the national policy has always prohibited dogs, many stores, including all of Austin's Lowe's have not only allowed them, but their employees routinely greet them with treats.

I think maybe it's time for an "Occupy Lowe's" event! :-)

I would rather have a horse slaughtered as humanely as possible than tortured by starving to death or turned out in the wild where they don't know how to survive. I know a ton of people that started a 'horse operation' even though they don't know anything about horses because it was 'the cool thing to do' and because it was so cheap to accumulate them and they inbreed so much that it is impossible to track their bloodlines. We need to start up the slaughter houses again and make the breed associations put more of an effort towards investigating the complaints of the so called "Breeders". Unfortunately it isn't the responsible horse people like myself that got us into this problem but we're the ones having to pay for it.

We absolutely will! Probably in 4 years or so. . . I know a lot can change in 4 years, particularly in regions where gorilla-viewing is possible, but where would you suggest? Consider that we will have (older) kids in tow. Safety is the number one concern, ability to SEE the wildlife is the other (which is why Gombe Stream is amazing, by the way -- the chimps, though completely "wild", are accustomed to researchers in the area, and so they do not run screaming when you are in their vicinity -- the viewing was unbelievable).

I had a Panasonic Lumix, 12x optical zoom and 48x digital - no special lenses. I love it as it is lightweight and takes great photos in most conditions. I do strongly recommend having two cameras; the humidity in Malaysia causes major lens fog/camera issues. In case you do not already know - some tips - do not use the AC in your room; you can live without it and when the camera goes from colder to warmer, you get fog that can last up to an hour inside the camera. Removing lens cap, setting in the sun, and having silica packets in a ziploc bag with the camera helps. (Save up silica packets from vitamins or other packaging, the little gel packets - but be sure to bring all of them home with you; they are great for electronics but toxic to animals). Due to sudden rains, bring ziplocs for all electronics!

I love this blog! My husband and I are traveling with our two children, ages 6 and 8, to Sabah in April. We will be visiting the Borneo Rainforest Lodge, the Kinabatangan, Lankayan . . . Our hope is to see all of the great apes in their natural habitats. We went to Gombe Stream, where Jane Goodall did her research with the chimpanzees, about 10 years ago -- if you have not visited yet, you must! I am not sure if the season will be in our favor for viewing while in Borneo, but I am crossing my fingers! You were very lucky to see as much as you did! :-)

Louie's Italian (Fairview west of Eagle) has a great Sunday brunch. It's a full buffet with salads, pizza, biscuits and gravy, made to order omelets and waffles, fresh made baked goods (cinnamon rolls, cobblers, breads). I don't remember the price off the top of my head but it's reasonable.

To Mat, banning dogs won't solve the problem. As the previous poster stated, just turn the other way or avoid the animal. You can ban pets but you can ban service dogs or other working animals in training. You'll still run into the same problem, and it's illegal to ban service animals.
Anyway I just brought my cat (yes Cat) to HD for the first time today, and everyone loved her. She loved being pushed in the cart. She was well behaved until we got outside again and she jumped out of the cart. More then half the staff gave her pets and were excited to see a cat in the store since they always see dogs. Even customers turned to look at the sight. I saw no sign on the doors but one employee did say pets shouldnt be in there but said it's not a strict rule as long as they are well behaved and in a cart.
I have always seen more pets in Lowes then I have in HD. I say as long as the animal is behaved and just sits quietly in a cart then why not? Large dogs can be a hassle and can get in the way but like i said, if they behave then they should go. My dog is large but is excitable around people so I dont bring him.

To Mat,the Father of the allergic child...No offense..but there are ALOT more toxic and potentially dangerous items in your local hardware store than a dog on a leash.Being in the medical profession,I advise you and your child to walk the other way if you see a dog,not demand that they be banned.Your child has to come in contact with it (or be in very close proximity) to have a severe reaction.Calm down.

Yes, but all they showed was a higher insulin than normal - 75 instead of 25. They thought it was Equine Metabolic Syndrome, but horses with that condition can have insulin levels of 700! Ultimately the consensus is she probably had heatstroke. She has been fine since, but I also watch her weight carefully. There are other posts on this under the pets label on the blog.
